I’ve been thinking…

… about Patriotism and more summer!

In July, we can enjoy long days, warm evenings, and lovely sunsets. This is vacation time and spending-time-with-our-families season. There are so many activities in which to engage during this bright month. We also get to participate in the celebration of the birth of the United States of America, this year being extra special at an amazing 250 years!

Here are a few suggestions that may help you explore or recall how your family was shaped by midsummer activities and/or patriotic ancestors:

* Write about a Patriot ancestor. If you don’t have one, record how your family came to be US citizens.

  • Did one (or more) of your ancestors fight in the Revolution? On which side? In what way?
  • Did your family immigrate here after the Revolution? From where? What was the reason?

* Write about how your family celebrated midsummer.

  • What kinds of activities filled your summers? Did you camp, travel, visit relatives. Record some of those special experiences.

* Write about Independence Day.

  • How did your family celebrate Independence Day? Barbecues, family gatherings, city parades, fireworks. How did the celebrations of your past inform your celebrations of today?
