I’ve been thinking…

… about change and new beginnings

September arrives with a sense of transition—summer fading, routines returning, and the first hints of autumn settling in. For many ancestors, this month marked shifts in work, school, and community life. It’s a time shaped by preparation, learning, and the changing landscape. September invites reflection on how families adapted to new rhythms and embraced the turning of the season. In our current generation, we also have the shadows of the catastrophic events of ‘9/11’ that also invite reflection.

These suggestions may assist you in recording memories about your ancestors and/or yourself:

* Write about how your ancestors experienced the shift from summer to autumn.

  • What changes in work, home life, or community routines took place in September? How did the season’s early signs—cooler mornings, changing leaves—shape their daily lives?

* Write about the role of education or learning in your family’s September history.

  • Did your ancestors return to school, begin apprenticeships, or take on new responsibilities this time of year? What educational milestones or stories stand out across generations?

* Write about a September place or memory that carries meaning for your family.

  • Are there landscapes, traditions, or annual events that signal the start of autumn in your family story? What personal memories echo this month’s themes of transition and renewal

* Write about your personal experiences, or that of family members, on 9/11.

  • Where were you? How did you learn of the 9/11 events? What were your feelings? Did you have family members involved in the events? What was their experience?
